Rec trail getting closer

THUNDER BAY, ONT. — A non-motorized recreational trail for three of the four seasons is closer to reality in O’Connor Township and bordering Conmee Township.

At two of the past three O’Connor council meetings, Fleming Road — the border road between O’Connor and Conmee — is being proposed as part of the Kakabeka Falls to Shabaqua Trail Route.

Both townships are tentatively in favour of the lengthened route, but more work still has to be done.

“It’s a work in progress,” said O’Connor Mayor Jim Vezina. “We like the concept. (The Northwestern Ontario Recreational Trails Association and the townships) are sharing the trail. There’s some areas that aren’t going to be on the trail and some that are.

“We’re not involved in the planning of this at all. Literally, (The Northwestern Ontario Recreational Trails Association) came to us to ask us our permission and, in general, we’re in favour of it.

“It’s like anything else. We’ve got to make sure the legalities stuff is taken care of and our ducks are all in a row. That’s kind of a stage we are at right now. (Len Day of The Northwestern Ontario Recreational Trails Association) came to council a couple of meetings back and we said, ‘Yeah, we’re good with this’, but some of the areas are boundries with other municipalities, so before we’re going to get too deep, make sure you have those municipalities on board too.”

Vezina heard at a July 12 meeting that Conmee was tentatively on board as well.

“Basically, Conmee is in agreement with it in principle too, so now it’s a matter of us looking at the legal side of it,” said Vezina, who has been the O’Connor mayor since 2015. “We don’t mind supporting it, but we’re not going to pay for it and we’re not going to take liability for it.

“To me it looks like a wonderful idea, it looks like it will go through, but I’m not 100 per cent sure when all the i’s and t’s will be crossed and dotted.”

off-trail lyme signage from government of ontario
Lyme Disease Stakeholder Reference Group,

As was discussed at our last meeting in May, I am pleased to announce that the ministry has created off-trail signage reminding people that they are in a tick area and to take precautions to avoid getting a tick bite and to check for ticks (see attached).

These paper-based signs will be posted in provincial park campgrounds and bathroom areas. The signs are bilingual and have been distributed to Ontario Parks and are available to order for free at Service Ontario.

To order off-trail signs from Service Ontario, please follow the steps below:
1.            Go to: https://www.publications.serviceontario.ca/pubont/servlet/ecom/MainServlet?selectedLocale=en&utm_source=so&utm_campaign=orignal&utm_medium=keyword/
2.            Type “Lyme Signage” in the search bar. The two off-trail signs will show up.
3.            Register for an account.
4.            Order the quantities of your choice and wait for delivery.

Jason (on behalf of the Lyme Disease Stakeholder Reference Group Secretariat)

Each ride is five to ten kilometers with lots of rest stops and fun conversation with your neighbours along the way.
No registration is required. Rain or shine. In extreme weather situations, please visit this webpage to see if the ride or walk is cancelled. Be sure to subscribe to Bike Kitchener email updates for cycling news and updates on the master plan.

About Kitchener’s new Cycling and Trails Master Plan

Kitchener has a solid foundation for active transportation enjoyed by many residents across the city. Our new Cycling and Trails Master Plan will serve as the catalyst for building a city where people willingly and joyfully choose active transportation for getting around. Community engagement is essential to creating the new master plan – please be involved and share your ideas! Over the next year, city staff will be reaching out all across the city to hear from people about how we can make Kitchener a great place to walk and bike.
The ultimate goal is to double the number of trips taken by walking and cycling every five years. To achieve that goal, it’s important to build a connected network and the master plan will identify the long-term investments required to build pedestrian and cycling infrastructure for recreational users, commuters and everyday transportation needs.
Dates for the start of the consultation on our Trails Master Plan are now available – they are happening across the summer. As much input as we can get to support the recreation, leisure, health and multi-user needs for trails (and indeed, the tourism aspects) would be appreciated to balance the strong need to address active transportation needs of the City would be appreciated!

Please feel free to pass on these dates to your contacts – or pass on interested local contacts to me as you see fit!

wintergreen funding for timmins trails

Upgrades and repairs are being done to the Scout Rock Trail in Timmins by student workers of the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority. Part of the work is being financed by the Wintergreen Fund in Timmins. That was acknowledged this week despite the steady rain. Among those who were on the trail checking the progress Tuesday were MRCA general manager Dave Vallier, at left, student workers Bradley Bonsall, Kameron Brousseau, Wintergreen chair Michael Doody, Tyler Dacosta, Taylor Buczkowski, MRCA field supervisor Kevin Gagnon, and Wintergreen volunteer Kees Pols.

Join us in Seeley's Bay on November 1, 2018, where we will be talking about the business of trails. A Trailhead Ontario "Partners" Event.

credit valey conservation refurbishment
One of Mississauga’s most significant redevelopment projects is moving forward.
One of the lasting legacy projects of the late Mississauga councillor Jim Tovey, who represented the Lakeview area in Ward 1 from 2010 to 2018, was a conservation area called the Lakeview Waterfront Connection.
According to the Credit Valley Conservation Authority, the project will transform the currently degraded section of the shore into a beautiful naturalized conservation area, which is expected to become a hub for waterfront recreation and a hotspot for wildlife migration.

Ontario Trails Council User Issues Survey

Find and use your favorite today!

User Group Meeting Leads to Survey on Use Issues

Through various process the Ontario Trails Council has an idea of the number of trail projects and the value that they represent to capital investment in Ontario each year.

We also get called regularly to set up processes or advise on how to approach authorities in order to get trail access. In many cases we also write grants and work with groups to stimulate process to get trails developed or built.

What is not so clear is a map of where access and use is at a crossroads. It is clear through sdome discussion that a clearer inventory of hot spots or at risk trails would enable use to better respond to bring change or adjustment so that trails are not lost.

We need you to help us by answering our survey on land access issues. We have designed this for both the land manager and the trail user to complete.

An e-mail will be sent to OTC Members to complete the survey once it is live.

Thanks

Friends of Island Lake mark successful end to Close the Gap campaign

Orangeville Banner
The chair of Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) doesn’t think a project such as the trail system and boardwalks at Island Lake would have been built in larger metropolis areas.
At least not in the hands-on fashion the Friends of Island Lake (FOIL) and their partners did it here in Dufferin County, according to Mississauga Coun. Nando Iannicca.

“The people that came out here and rolled up their sleeves, the sweat equity they put in, it is a vocation, it is an honour,” Iannicca said during the celebration marking FOIL’s completion of the 11.5 km Vicki Barron Lakeside Trail around Island Lake on Friday (Aug. 28).

“You wouldn’t have had this done in some other bigger cities,” the CVC chair added. “It is quite an achievement and it speaks more to the character and the class of the community above and beyond what was actually built.”

More than a decade, $2 million in donations, 11.5 km of trail and 12,000 volunteer hours later, FOIL has finally closed the gap. The final leg of the trail at Island Lake was officially opened for public use in July.
On Friday, FOIL past chairman Bob Shirley thanked the dozens of people and organizations that came together to contribute to the planning and construction of the Vicki Barron Lakeside Trail.

They were the ones who spent more than 12,000 volunteers hours on the project, whether that meant collecting scrap metal, clearing the trail’s path or screwing wooden planks onto the boardwalk on their own.
“Absolutely, this could not have happened without the FOIL members,” Shirley said. “It just goes on and on. Once we got started, it just seemed to keep flowing.”

None of this would have happened without all of their efforts throughout the years, Shirley said, singling out the trail’s brainchild and current Mono CAO Keith McNeily.
